Special care for children's homes in North - Governor
by P. Krishnaswamy
The Government has introduced several measures for the proper care of
nearly 5,000 children in orphanages in the Northern province and to
provide them a better future, Northern province Governor Maj. Gen. G. A.
Chandrasiri told the Sunday Observer .
He held two rounds of discussions in the presence of all authorities
concerned, including Divisional Secretaries and Probation Officers. He
said that all orphanages/children's homes would be registered and
district level committees will be appointed to monitor the children's
welfare in the homes.
After defeating LTTE terrorism in May 2009, the Security Forces found
children in various illegal children's homes run by the LTTE, including
the Chencholai home, which the LTTE abandoned and there was no one to
take care of the children, he said. People fled to Chettikulam in the
final days of the war against terrorism and the LTTE retreated leaving
the children. Thereafter, government authorities took steps to hand over
the children to homes run by Catholic and Hindu organisations and other
childcare homes, he said.
