COPE spotlights malpractices in some govt ventures
by L.S. Ananda WEDAARACHCHI
Several malpractices in some government ventures had been revealed by
the Committee on Public Enterprises (COPE). COPE chairman and Senior
Minister DEW Gunasekera said that some appointments had been made
without the approval of the Board of Directors of the Corporations and
Treasury.
He said that some heads of corporations never appeared before the
COPE although the COPE had conducted inquires at over 20 sittings
annually prior to 2009. There had been an instance where a public sector
corporation had invested money on Treasury Bills and opened savings
accounts in private banks without the approval of the Board of
Directors.
The COPE Chairman said that officials of over 100 public enterprises
have been interviewed to date, from July last year and an interim report
would be submitted to Parliament soon.
He said that a report on all public ventures will be submitted before
July this year.
