Gateway excels in Athletics and Swimming

The athletes and swimmers of Gateway College produced star performances at the recently concluded inter International School competitions. In Athletics, Gateway secured 40 Gold medals for individual events and 7 Golds for relays.

Areeb Atheek (U-9 60M), Maleeka Hassan (U-11 80M - new meet record), Anne Hirushi Zoysa (U-13 200M and Long Jump), Shanika Fernando (U-15 200M), Dushantha Samarasinghe (U-15 High Jump), Tharanga Gunasekara (U-17 Javelin Throw), Thilina Wijesekara (U-17 100m), Vindula Kalatuarachchi (U-17 110m Hurdles), Haneef Mohamed (U-17 Javelin Throw), Harshana Kolongoda (U-17 High Jump), Rashmi Pathirajah (U-17 Discus Throw, Shot Put - both new meet records), Nadeeshani Henderson (U-19 100m, 200m - New meet record and 400m), Chamathka Kavindri (U-19 Javelin Throw - new meet record, Discus Throw and Shot Put), Ireshani Rajasinghe (U-19 Triple Jump), Keshani Perera (U-19 100m Hurdles - new meet record and Long Jump), Vijini Dahanayake (U-19 High Jump), Sajith Sathsara de Silva (U-19 100m and 200m), Evan William Felthman (U-19 Discus Throw and Shot Put), Tharindu Gayan (U-19 Triple Jump, Long Jump), Tharindu Uthum Fernando (U-19 Javelin Throw - new meet record), Natasha Arulraj (U-19 1500m), Anjani Pulwansa (U-20 Long Jump - new meet record, Triple Jump and 100m Hurdles), Sajeed Jainullabdeen (U-20 Discus Throw - new meet record, Shot Put and Javelin Throw), Chetha Senadeera (U-20 High Jump) and Abirajitha Manoharan (Under-20 Girls 400m and 800m) were the Gold medal winners.

Several Gateway athletes also won age group championships. They included Maleeka Hassan (Under-11 Girls), Anne Hirushi Zoysa (Under-13 Girls), Nadeeshani Henderson, Chamathka Kavindri (Under-19 Girls), Anjani Pulwansa (Under-20 Girls) and Sajeed Jainullabdeen (Under-20 Boys). Sajith Sathsara de Silva was named the best male athlete of the tournament.

At swimming, Menu Bodinagoda (U-14 100 M Breast stroke), Chihiro Fernando (U-10 50m Breast Stroke, 50M Dolphin), Suhiru Thamal (U-12 50M Dolphin - New Record), Tashia Dias (Over-16 200m Individual Medley), Uvindu Perera (Over-16 200m Individual Medley, 50 Backstroke - both new Meet Records), Udara Cumarathunga (Over-16 200m Freestyle, 50 Back Stroke - New Record, 50M Free Style), Chamaka Sinhabahu (Over-16 200M Free Style), Amrith Perera (U-10 50M Free Style - New Record), Parami Ranawaka (U-16 50M Backstroke) won golds for Gateway. Udara Cumarathunga was the Over-16 Girls Champion. In the Novices Swimming Meet Nisansa Igalawithana and Amrith Perera performed exceptionally well to win gold medals in 200 Freestyle and 50 Free Style. In the 74th Two Mile open sea swimming meet organized by Air Lanka Aquatic Sports Union 5 boys and 4 girls completed the event in less than 70 minutes. Competing with 609 swimmers, Uvindu Perera secured the 6th place.
