Sri Lanka’s postal service links even the tiniest and most remote
hamlets in the country, Postal Services Minister Jeewan Kumaratunga told
the Sunday Observer commenting on the progress of the postal sector.
“The dedicated and efficient service we provide has won us this
year’s bronze medal from the World Postal Association. We intend to
provide an even better service to the people by introducing the Post
Super Market concept. Through this we intend to convert the postal
service into a profitable institution,” he said.
Minister Kumaratunga said that the delivery service of the Department
operates smoothly and efficiently. The Overseas Postal Division has
become an efficient and reliable service among the people.
Thousands of people in villages rely on the Postal Department to
bring the foreign remittances being sent by relatives who work abroad.
“Our overseas division is engaged in sending a large number of
letters and parcels to the masses”, he said. The postal service delivers
85 percent of parcels and letters to residences within five days even
when they are sent from abroad.
