Moped laws to be strictly enforced

The Traffic Police will nab moped riders without driving licence, revenue licence and helmets from April 1, as the grace period given by the Traffic Police for them to register with the Registrar of Motor Vehicles lapses on that day, DIG (Traffic) Asoka Wijetilleka told the Sunday Observer.

He said the Registrar of Motor Vehicles gave time till December 31, 2010 to register their mopeds with the Department and obtain revenue licence and a further grace period was given to them till April 1 to complete that process.

The reckless riding habits of moped users have caused accidents on the roads endangering the lives of most of the riders on the road as they do not wear helmets.

"From April 1, the Traffic Police will strictly enforce the law with regard to mopeds and detect on moped riders without driving licence, helmets and revenue licence'" he added.

The Traffic Police will also strictly enforce the law with regard to three wheeler drivers parking their vehicles obstructing the view of by lanes.
