Interpol says WCup ‘terrorist’ arrested

WORLD CUP CRICKET: ISLAMABAD, March 26 (AFP) - A “terrorist” suspected of planning to attack the cricket World Cup has been arrested after help from authorities across South Asia including in Pakistan, Interpol chief Ronald Noble said.

“Just last week, through the cooperation from Pakistan, Sri Lanka and the Maldives, we were able to identify, locate and arrest a terrorist, who had left Karachi on his way to the Maldives with criminal intentions,” Noble said.


St. Mathew’s vs St. John’s today

CRICKET: The 40th cricket encounter between St. Mathew’s, Dematagoda and St. John’s College, Dematagoda popularly known as the ‘Battle of Dematagoda’ will be played today at Railway grounds, Mount Mary. St. Mathew’s will be led by all-rounder Mohamed Safran and St. John’s will have Thuwan Roshan as skipper.


All-Island U-15 hockey April 2 to 5

HOCKEY: The All-Island boys and girls under-15 hockey tournament organised by the Sri Lanka Schools Hockey Association and the Matale Schools Hockey Association will be played at Matale from April 2 to 5.The matches will be played at the Edward Park, Bernard Aluwihara Stadium and the Nandimithra International Stadium which will be also the venue of the two cup finals and the two consolation finals.


Present Boys beat Old Rajans by 51 runs

CRICKET: A useful knock of 63 runs by skipper Hemal Munaweera of the present boys team helped them to beat Old Rajans by 51 runs in their Bandula Gunaratne Memorial Trophy cricket match of Dharmaraja College played at Lake View, Kandy.

Dharmaraja College: 186 in 44.3 overs (K.B. Wijekoon 40, Hemal Munaweera 63, S. Gunasekera 14; Upesh Wijesiri 2 for 25, Rukshan Suriyarachchi 2 for 32, Samitha Rajapakse 2 for 47, D.P. Mitipolaarachchi 3 for 16).

Old Rajans XI: 135 all out in 35.2 overs (Senaka Dissanayake 33, D.P. Mitipolaarachchi 24, Prasanna Walalawela 10, P.R. Amarakoon 10; Nuwan Karunaratne 2 for 22, Aravinda Vithanachchi 4 for 18, Deneth Lanka 3 for 29).

St. Servatius fancied to win ‘50-over’ against St. Thomas’

ST. THOMAS’ VS ST. SERVATIUS: St. Servatius, Matara should be better placed to win the 50-over battle against St. Thomas’, Matara at the Uyanwatte Stadium, Matara today.

Going on the performance of the two teams at the 111th ‘Big Match’, St. Servatius should be able to win this game.

However, last year St. Thomas’ College edged through to win on a faster scoring rate when rain intervened.

Skipper Kaushal Silva hit a magnificent 129 to put SSC in a commanding position on the second day of their SLC Premier League Tier A cricket tournament match against Baduraliya CC which continued at Maitland Place yesterday.

SSC: 340 for 6 decl (T. Paranavithana 46, K. Silva 129, T. Kandamby 28, L. Fernando 62, O. Wijesiriwardena 3 for 71).
