Pension scheme to benefit plantation workers too

Sri Lanka Social Security Board has taken moves to absorb nearly 500,000 plantation sector employees to pension scheme which is to be implemented under the social security plan, Chairman Nimal Amarasingha said.

This project is to be implemented by Sri Lanka Social Security Board under the "Mahinda Chinthana" national development concept to protect the life of plantation sector labourers, managers and employers, according to Social Security Board sources. This pension scheme, is expected to be implemented under the leadership of President Mahinda Rajapaksa and Finance Ministry has received positive response from estate superintendents, estate owners and trade unions. Under the supervision of Minister Arumugan Thondaman a special unit has been set up in the Sri Lanka Social Security Board.

More than 400,000 beneficiaries have been absorbed to social security pension plan and moves are underway to increase this number to one million, the Sri Lanka Social Security Board sources added.
