Fair prices guaranteed during festive season

President Mahinda Rajapaksa has directed officials to ensure reasonable prices of essential commodities during the Sinhala and Hindu festive season.

President Rajapaksa was addressing the "Food Protection and Cost of Living Cabinet Sub Committee" meeting at Temple Trees, last week.

The aim of setting up economic centres is to sell vegetables and other commodities to customers at fair prices, according to President Rajapaksa.

Special attention was paid towards the market price trends within the last month.

There is a trend in the market where the prices of vegetables going gown while the prices of eggs and chicken have also dropped by a considerable level.

Fisheries and Aquatic Resources Minister Rajitha Senaratna said that the fish prices have also dropped in recently.

During the meeting President Rajapaksa told the relevant authorities to heed the advice of experts to promote the nutrition level of people as well as schoolchildren.

The President instructed that suppliers should use plastic containers when transporting vegetables are transported from Jaffna and Nuwara-Eliya.
