New VC of Jaffna University
Professor Vasanthi Arasaratnam has been appointed as
the new Vice Chancellor of the University of Jaffna. She is the
first woman Vice Chancellor of the University.
Prof. Arasaratnam joined the Medical Faculty of
Jaffna as a lecturer, and was appointed as the head of the Faculty
in 1990.
In 2000 she was appointed as the first Dean of the
Medical Faculty of Jaffna.
Professor Arasaratnam succeeds Prof. K.
Shunmugalingam as the Vice Chancellor.
Dhamma, Abhidhamma classes
As a special project in the commemoration
celebrations of the 2600th year of the Enlightenment of the Buddha,
the Colombo Young Men's Buddhist Association (YMBA) will commence
classes in Dhamma and Abhidhamma in the English medium. The classes
commenced yesterday and will be held at the Head Office of the YMBA
at Borella every Saturday at 3.00 p.m.
The class was presided by President of the Colombo
YMBA Suren Abeyagoonasekera.
Renowned Dhamma teachers P. Mahanama, P. Wattegama,
Jaliya Ekanayake and Metta Fernando will conduct the classes.
Over 30 students including professionals are
scheduled to attend the one-year course.
Retired NHDA employees felicitated

The services rendered by the retired employees of
the National Housing Development Authority (NHDA) must be lauded as
employees are the most valuable asset of the organisation, said
Construction, Engineering Services Housing and Common Amenities
Minister Wimal Weerawansa.
The Minister was addressing a ceremony at the
Pradeepa Hall, Maligawatta to felicitate retired NHDA employees.
Sisu Udana scholarships were also awarded to 38 children who had
passed the year 5 scholarship examination.
Move to help youth showcase talents
The Ministry of Youth Affairs and Skills Development
will launch a Youth Symphony Orchestra to help youth to showcase
their latest talents at national and international levels.
Youth between 16-18 are eligible. They should apply
before April 30.
