Computer, ICT - powerful tools in development -Minister
Siyambalapitiya
"Computer, information and communication technology are powerful
weapons in the country's development," said Telecommunication and
Information Technology Minister Ranjith Siyambalapitiya.
He was the keynote speaker at opening of the 605th Nenasala at the
Udowita Undugoda Sri Bimbarama temple in Mabopitiya in Kegalle, under
President Mahinda Rajapaksa's concept of setting up 1000 Nenasalas
islandwide.
"ICT literacy in this country has reached 30 percent.
Our aim is to increase it to 75 percent by 2016. Nenasalas will
provide valuable support in this regard. The computer is there to work
on and not to be left in a box or concealed under a cloth".
ICTA Chief Executive Officer Reshan Dewapura said, "Nenasalas play a
major role in providing the knowledge of Information and Communication
Technology to the people in the village.
The project has gained plaudits internationally also because of its
efficiency.
People can enjoy many services and facilities and have access to vast
knowledge because of ICT.
Our objective is to further extend these benefits".
Chief Incumbent of the Sri Bimbarama Ven. Hikgoda Anuruddha Thera and
ICTA Senior Program Head Athula Pushpakumara also participated.
