Elections for 61 LG bodies after June

Elections for 61 Local Government bodies where elections were not held due to ongoing court cases will be held after June under the 2010 new voters list.

Elections Commissioner Mahinda Desapriya said the new voters list of 2010 will come into effect on May 31.Last week, the Court of Appeal ordered the Elections Commissioner to accept the nomination papers of 45 LG bodies rejected by Elections Department officials. Nomination papers of 61 LG bodies were rejected.

Sixty-one writ applications had been filed by the UPFA, UNP and other political parties; 45 were accepted and 16 were dismissed by the Court of Appeal.
