The Health Ministry has warned those who manufacture grocery items,
processed food and beverages to refrain from taking customers for a ride
by offering various items free when selling their products.
A spokesman for the Ministry said that it was a common sight to see
food products such as coconut oil, chocolates, biscuits, cordials and
canned fish being sold along with other products to attract customers.
According to on the spot investigations carried out by the Health
Ministry's flying squad recently, it has been found that some imported
bottles of coconut oil are sold along with stainless steel spoons, forks
and knives.
It was also found that some locally manufactured confectionery and
imported biscuits are sold along with toys to attract small children.
At a leading supermarket in the city, a certain brand of imported
toothpaste is sold along with toothbrushes and soap.
Health Minister Maithripala Sirisena told the Sunday Observer that
all food product manufacturers should refrain from misleading people by
selling their main products along with other items.
He said that even shop owners, especially certain supermarket owners
should comply with instructions given to them.
The Minister said some items such as sugar, milk foods and dry
rations could be sold at discounted rates when more than one item of the
same produce is bought.
The Minister has called upon customers to be vigilant when purchasing
inferior products which are freely available in the market.
