Mega water supply project for Ampara

The National Water Supply and Drainage Board (NWSDB) will implement a
mega water supply project at a cost of Rs. 7,703 million in the Ampara
district, a senior officer of the NWSDB told the Sunday Observer.
The Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) will fund Rs. 6,239
million of this project while the Government will bear Rs. 1,464 million
according to the officer.The completion of this project will benefit
over 209,270 persons in the district.
A pump house will be constructed at Kondawattuwan and water pumped to
the Kalmunai plant.
Under this project the distribution channels of several existing
water supply schemes will be expanded. The distribution channels of the
Pothuvil, Uhana, Damana, Hingurana, Irakkamam and Sammanthurai water
supply schemes will be expanded.
A new water supply scheme will be constructed at Maha-Oya. The
capacity of the Dehiattakandiya treatment plant will also be increased.
The Maha-Oya water supply scheme will comprise the construction of an
intake house, laying raw water transmission main lines,construction of
water towers (1000 m3 and 450 m3), and laying of the distribution
system.
