Rev.Sarath Hettiarachchi received the
Prime Minister’s Award for the Most Popular Christian Priest
in the Year 2011, organised by the United Mass Communicators
Association (Mass Lanka), at the Galle Face Hotel last week.
Since 2005 Rev.Sarath Hettiarachchi is with His Excellency
the President Mahinda Rajapaksa and supported him to bring
peace and harmony to Sri Lanka. Rev.Sarath visited the
battlefield to encourage war heroes together with inter
religious leaders. |
Sri Lankan pilgrims’ incident unfortunate - India

New Delhi (PTI) The External Affairs Ministry of
India has termed as “unfortunate” the attack on a group of Sri
Lankan pilgrims in Chennai and said it “strongly disapproves” this
kind of behaviour towards those visiting the country, especially
religious pilgrims.
Limit polythene use at Esala perahera
The Environment Ministry has called upon the public
to limit the amount of plastic and polythene they bring when
visiting Kandy to see the Esala perahera. The Central Environment
Authority jointly with the Central Provincial Council authorities
and in partnership with several other organisations has already
launched their environment conservation program to keep the Kandy
city clean during the Esala perahera season.

Vinivida insurance for scribes
The National Insurance Trust will launch an
insurance scheme - Vinivida - for media personnel on August 28,
Chairman Senaka D. Abeygoonasekara said. He said media personnel
could enrol in the insurance scheme, which is similar to the
Agrahara Insurance for public servants, by paying Rs. 100 monthly.

US credit rating downgraded
Standard & Poor’s downgraded the US government’s
credit rating on Friday for the first time in history, saying the
recent plan worked out to raise the federal debt ceiling “falls
short” of what’s needed to stabilise the nation’s longer-term
finances.
Hearing loss: Please help
One
year and eight month old H.H. Tharushi is suffering from conductive
hearing loss (B/L microtia and canal atresia) in both her ears which
need to be treated by a bone anchored hearing aid BAHA, according to
ENT Surgeon Dr. Senaka Welandawe of the Teaching Hospital,
Karapitiya.
The cost of the device is around Rs. 450,000 and the
model will be Cochlear BAHA Divino with soft band. The price is
likely to vary depending on the fluctuations in foreign currency.

Wimala - filmstar of yesteryear passes away
The
death occurred of Mrs. Wimala (Venetia) Somaratne, wife of Amaradasa
Somaratne (Asst. Director of Heladiva Film Arts) and mother of late
Lochana Somaratne.
She was an active member of a number of social
organisations including the All Ceylon Buddhist Ladies Congress,
International Buddhist Congress, Anuradhapura Sambuddhatwa Upasthana
Samithiya, Mahabodhi Society, Maligakanda and Vidyodaya Pirivena
Maligakanda. She also played the main role in the Sinhala film,
‘Dingirimenika’ screened in 1956.
The funeral will take place at the General Cemetery,
Borella today.
Lankan entrepreneur wins Int’l award
Susantha Shan Sisilchandra, a young entrepreneur
born in Sri Lanka, received the “International Businessman of The
Year Award” from the Greater Dallas-Asian American Chamber of
Commerce. The mayor of Dallas Mike Rawlings, presented Shan with an
award at a ceremony held at The Western Galleria Hotel in Dallas,
Texas, USA on July 28.
Susantha, an old boy of Nalanda College, Colombo, is
the first Sri Lankan to receive the coveted Award in the USA. He was
judged along with more than 25 Asian Americans from Texas on
outstanding leadership and international accomplishments. The annual
awards gala is held to recognise the notable accomplishments by
Asian American entrepreneurs and business leaders as well as the
outstanding contributions by Dallas, companies to the Asian American
community.
