LG polls - UPFA leaders to discuss nominations
by L.S. Ananda WEDAARACHCHI
The
leaders of the United People’s Freedom Alliance (UPFA) will meet on
Tuesday to discuss the nominations for the forthcoming local government
elections scheduled to be held in October this year. The UPFA’s main
party leaders will decide on their future action plan and the
nominations for the forthcoming local government elections at the
meeting, a senior politician of the UPFA said.
The term of office of 23 local bodies including 17 Municipal Councils
was extended by President Mahinda Rajapaksa due to the world cup cricket
tournament held in April this year.
Elections Commissioner Mahinda Deshapriya said last week that
nominations for the remaining local bodies will be accepted from August
18-25 by the Elections Department.
Meanwhile, the Elections Commissioner hopes to hold elections in
Pudukudirippu and the Weralabada Pattu Pradeshiya Sabhas in the
Mullaitivu district and his officials have called for a report in this
regard. The clearing of landmines has not been completed yet in those
areas and hence elections were not held.
The main opposition parties, the UNP and JVP are also due to meet
next week to plan their strategies for the forthcoming local government
elections.
Among the 23 local bodies which will go to the polls are 17 Municipal
Councils including Colombo, Sri Jayawardenapura, Negombo, Moratuwa,
Gampaha, Galle, Matara, Kandy, Nuwara Eliya, Kurunegala, Badulla and
Anuradhapura.
