Certificates for Police Life Saving Unit personnel
Defence Secretary Gotabaya Rajapaksa presented certificates to 20 men
and women of the Police Life Saving Unit who successfully completed
Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) training conducted by Med 1 (Pvt)
Ltd. The function was held at the Defence Ministry's auditorium on
Friday.
The Sri Lanka Police has been involved in life saving since 1928 and
become an official part of the National Life Saving Association when it
was formed in 1947. They provide life saving support at major public
events such as poson poya festivities and sporting activities. Through
the years, they have continued to develop their water rescue and basic
life support skills.
However, for the first time in the unit's history, they now have an
elite group of twenty police men and women who have completed 200 hours
of intensive EMT training by Med 1's International Medical Training
Institute in Ratmalana, funded by the World Health Organisation.
The course was conducted to the same standards found in the US and
met the criteria established by the Trauma Secretariat of the Minister
of Health for EMT education.
Although the role of an EMT is new to Sri Lanka, these global
professionals provide life saving out-of-hospital professional emergency
health care.
After awarding the certificates Secretary Defence and other guests
presented some mementos to the instructors of the Med 1 (Pvt) Ltd.
IGP N.K. Ilangakoon, Western Province Governor, Alavi Mawlana, CDS
Air Chief Marshal Roshan Gunathilaka, P.P. Singh representative of the
World Health Organisation and Senior Officers of Med 1 Institute were
also present.
