17% of vehicles to Kandy fail emission test

Nearly 17 percent of vehicles that entered the Kandy city from August 10 - 12 failed the emission test, according to a survey conducted by the Ministry of Environment. "A total of 334 vehicles were tested during these three days; 59 failed the emission test," said Director, Air Resource Management Centre of the Ministry of Environment,A Jayatilake.

Free vehicle emission tests were conducted in Kandy last week by the Ministry. These were conducted at the main entry points to Kandy - Mahaiyawa, William Gopallawa Mawatha and near the Technical College.

The tests were carried out jointly with Officers of the Motor Traffic Department and the Kandy Police. Legal action was taken against the owners of the vehicles which failed the test.Following regulations, the Police have obtained the driving licences of the owners of these vehicles. These defects would have to be rectified within two weeks and another fuel emission test conducted before they can get their driving licences released from the police.
