Projects for welfare of widows in North and East

Women numbering 59,601 have become widows in the Northern and Eastern Provinces due to the battle and other reasons. Child Development and Women's Affairs Minister Tissa Karalliyadda said.

The Minister said the Government is continuing relief and other assistance to them uninterruptedly.

There are 42,665 widows in the Eastern Province and 16,936 in the North, he said.

Minister Karalliyadda noted that besides the battle, natural disasters have also made some women widows.

The Government has implemented welfare programs in the North and the East towards the well-being of these widows. Livelihood and psychological guidance are also being provided to them.The Child Development and Women's Affairs Ministry, Economic Development Ministry, Social Services Ministry and Resettlement Ministry have implemented welfare projects to improve the living standards of these widows.
