The Parliament of Sri Lanka has already laid the ground work for the
Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (CPA) Conference at the BMICH
next year from September 7-15, Speaker Chamal Rajapaksa told the Sunday
Observer.
An organising committee under the chairmanship of Deputy Speaker
Chandima Weerakkody and an Advisory Panel comprising Party Leaders under
his chairmanship have been appointed, he said.
The CPA celebrated its centenary in London recently. At the
centennial conference, Speaker Chamal Rajapaksa was elected President of
the CPA by the General Assembly. Sri Lanka was chosen as the next venue
for the CPA conference.
The Speaker said that his election as the CPA President and its
decision to choose Sri Lanka as the next forum for the conference is an
honour bestowed on the country by the Commonwealth fraternity.
Around 1,000 delegates comprising Speakers, Parliamentarians,
officials and observers will attend the CPA conference in Sri Lanka.
He said the high-level Parliamentary delegations at the recent CPA
conference were very keen to visit Sri Lanka to ascertain the
development activities in the country.
The Speaker said that the mission of the CPA is to promote the
advancement of Parliamentary democracy by enhancing knowledge and
understanding of democratic governance and also by building an informed
Parliamentary community to deepen the Commonwealth’s democratic
commitment and to further cooperation among its Parliaments and
legislatures. It achieves its mission through activities such as
conferences, training events, publications, providing information and
Parliamentary visits.
