District Sports Committees to be established again
DISTRICT SPORTS COMMITTEES: The Minister of Sports, Mahindananda
Aluthgamage stated that the Ministry of Sports' attention has been drawn
towards re-establishing district sports committees with not more than 13
members to each so that it covers each administrative district's sports
development. This is been done as per the regulations in the Sports Act
of 1973, 23 in developing the sports at the district level.
As per the instructions given in article 11 paragraph one in
establishing district sports clubs, the sports club is given the
responsibility of developing the sports in that area and its
administration have been highlighted. Further these district sports
clubs are responsible in educating the Minister of Sports on the
development of sports in that district 13 members are to be in this
committee inclusive of a President, Secretary and a Treasurer.
The Ministry of Sports states the Provincial Sports Minister and a
Member of Parliament of the district will be joint President of this
committee, whilst the Government Agent of the area will be the Secretary
of the District Sports Committee. The post of treasurer will be held by
the Deputy Inspector of Police of the area, while the rest of the
District Sports Committee will comprise the Commissioner of the Local
Government Authority, Director of Health, Director of Education,
Director of Highways, District Sports Officer and several other
government officials.
