Randoli Maha Perahera: A record number of 400,000 devotees witnessed the Randoli Maha Perahera of the Devinuwara Sri Vishnu Maha Devalaya which paraded the streets in Devinuwara. Former L.S.S.P. Leader Dr. N.M. Perera’s 32nd death commemoration was held at a ceremony at the Yatiyantota public grounds under the patronage of Prime Minister D.M. Jayaratne, Senior Ministers Prof. Tissa Vitharana, Athauda Seneviratne, Education Minister Bandula Gunawardene and Telecommunication and Information Technology Minister Ranjith Siyambalapitiya were also present. Here the Premier unveils the plaque after laying the foundation stone to erect the statue of Dr. Perera.

Ports Development and Road Development Deputy Minister Rohitha Abeygunawardena opened a public library last week. Kalutara Pradeshiya Sabha Chairman Deesha Keerthi Laxsman Vidanapathirana and P.S. Member Keerthi Gunathilake also participated in the ‘Gamin Gamata-Dorin Dorata’ village development program, a novel concept of the Kalutara P.S. Chairman. by Kalutara Cor.

The Archaeological Museum at the Star Fort, Matara was opened by the National Heritage Minister Dr. Jagath Balasooriya, recently. Southern Province Governor Kumari Balasooriya, Matara District Secretary, W.K.K. Athukorala, D.I.G. Southern Province, M.K.D.W. Amarasinghe and Co-ordination Secretary to the President, Aruna Gunaratna were also present.

Two giant bells for Kelaniya Vishnu temple: Winsanda Engineering Works in Rawathawatta, Moratuwa has turned out two giant bells, out of hard bronze, each measuring 4 ½ feet in height and weighing one tonne in weight, to an order from a businessman to be donated to the new Vishnu temple which is under construction sponsored by the Public Relations Minister, Dr. Mervin Silva in the Kelnaiya area. The bells, products of sixty-four-year-old Gavin Mathis who has been in brazier business, coming down the generations, is also a Municipal Councillor of Moratuwa for the past 15 years. Pic: M.K.M. Feast of Our Lady of Matara

The annual feast of the Church of our Lady of Matara will be held from September 1-11, the administrator of the church Rev. Fr. Charles Hewavasam said.

The hoisting of the flagstaff will take place on September 1 at 4.00 p.m. at the church grounds, Beach Road, Kotuwegoda, Matara. Daily Novenas and masses will be held from September 1-8 at 4 p.m. daily.

The festive High Mass will be conducted by Rev. Fr. Charles Hewavasam. A rail-bus co-ordinated service will be in operation for the convenience of the pilgrims while lodging facilities will be available at the church grounds at St. Servatius College, Mahamaya and Ilma Vidyalaya.


National Green Awards - 2011

National Green Awards 2011, organised by the Central Environmental Authority (CEA), will be held on Tuesday at the BMICH under the patronage of President Mahinda Rajapaksa. Minister of Environment Anura Priyadharshana Yapa, will also be present.

Industries under the categories of Chemical and Petrochemical Industries, Textile Industries, Leather Industries, Garment Industries, Vehicle Service Stations, Food and Food-related Industries, Metal Crushers, Hotels, Medical Services, Mines and Mineral Processing and Rubber and Rubber-related Products operating with the Environmental Protection Licence can apply for awards. Government and Local Government institutions and schools which conduct environmental pioneer programs are eligible for the award.

Chairman CEA Charitha Herath stressed that main aim of this all-island program is to promote sustainable management of environment to achieve a 'greenish country' through a clean, green environment.


Thomian Fair from Sept. 1-3

S. Thomas' College (STC) Mount Lavinia will holds a fair from September, 1-3 to mark the 125th anniversary of the Old Boys Association.

The Co-Chairman of the Thomian Fair B.R.L. Fernando told a media briefing that the main objective of the fair was to ensure that everyone has an enjoyable time and to raise funds for the school.

A number of top corporate companies and businessmen in Colombo has joined hands with the OBA of STC to ensure a memorable funfair. Around 40,000 people visited the funfair on the last occasion and this time we expect a bigger crowd. Special areas have been demarcated to park vehicles.

He said the main sponsor for the event was Dialog and the other sponsors include - Gold FM and Sun FM, Commercial Bank and the Sampath Bank.

The Police Special Task Force (STF), the Army, the Navy and the Air force will display some of their equipment at the grounds.

Memorial lectures on Aug 27

The Peoples' Movement for the Rights of Patients (PMRP) will conduct the first in the series of the Dr. K. Balasubramaniam memorial lectures on Saturday, August 27 from 10.00 am at the Hall of the Centre for Society and Religion (CSR) at the Fatima Church premises, 281, Deans Road, Colombo 10.

The topic will be, 'A model doctor and the challenges facing a health activist.' The speaker will be one of Sri Lanka's most eminent physicians Prof. Carlo Fonseka, former Dean of the Medical Faculty of the University of Kelaniya. Dr. Balasubramaniam is the founder and patron of the PMRP who worked for half a century to restore a health service where the well-being of the patients is given top priority and provide quality drugs to all the people at affordable prices.


Ranjith Perera's book launch on Aug. 26

The book launch of "Winning an Unwinnable War - A tribute to our War Heroes" by former Director General and Competent Authority of the Sri Lanka Tourist Board, J.F. Ranjith Perera will be held on Friday, August 26 at 4.00 pm at the Sri Lanka Institute of Hotel and Tourism Management, Galle Road, Colombo 3.Defence Secretary Gotabaya Rajapaksa will be the chief guest.


Sandakadapahana on Sept. 18

Vocalist Sunil Edirisinghe's musical extravaganza, Sankadapahana will be held on September 18 at 6.30 p.m. at the Bishop's College auditorium, Colombo.

The event has been organised in aid of the Technology and Research Ministry Welfare Association.


Old Anandians Centenary Group get-together

The annual get-together and dinner dance of the Old Anandians Centenary Group will be held on Saturday, August 27 from 7.30 p.m. onwards at the Samudra Ballroom, Taj Samudra Hotel, Colombo.

The proceeds will go to scholarship programs for students and for infrastructure development of the College.

The Centenary Group celebrates its 20th anniversary this year.


JCISL health camp

A health camp organised by the Junior Chamber International Sri Lanka in collaboration with HelpAge Sri Lanka will be held on August 24, commencing 7.30 am at the Federation of Visually Handicapped, No. 94 Church Street, Slave Island, Colombo 2.

J.C. Kentaro Harada JCI, World President from Japan will be the chief guest.

Dr. Malar Vili Anton, Executive Vice President of JCISL Sri Lanka the project co-coordinator said that medicine and spectacles will be provided to the needy free.


Seminar on Janaza

The Colombo Janaza and Welfare Society has organised a seminar on "In the event of a Janaza" at the Muslim Study Circle, D.R. Wijewardene Mawatha, Colombo 10 on September 11 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

The seminar will discuss all aspects of a Janaza, with Islamic experts delivering lectures.


Mihintale Rajamaha Vihara priest arrested

The chief incumbent of the Mihintale Rajamaha Vihara, Ven. Namalwewa Rathanasara Thera was arrested at the Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA) today.

The Police said they took him into custody on an arrest warrant issued by the Anuradhapura Chief Magistrate, Darshika Vimalasuriya, who had ordered on August 12 to arrest the Thera, who had been charged for sexually abusing a 13-year-old girl, who is now under probationary care. She has been subjected to a medical examination.


Fewer women seek foreign jobs

The Foreign Employment Bureau (FEB) said there has been a drop in the number of women applying for foreign jobs this year.

FEB Chairman Kingsley Ranawaka said the number of males seeking foreign jobs has increased compared to the number of women seeking employment abroad.

"This is a good trend and we will encourage more men to seek foreign jobs", he said.
 


CMC gets tough with 300 eateries

The Colombo Municipal Council (CMC) will take legal action against 300 eateries including some star-class hotels, within the Colombo city limits, for operating without CMC licences.

Chief Medical Officer of the CMC, Dr. Pradeep Kariyawasam said it was compulsory for any business selling cooked food to meet the stipulated guidelines and obtain a licence prior to operating the business.

"The CMC has issued licences to over 250 eateries and hotels coming under its purview and they need to adhere to the rules to continue business", he said.
 


ANCL staffer's mother dies

Heen Menike Liyanage, mother of T. Shantha Pushpakumara, Head Reader of VDT Editorial English Reading Dept. of Lake House, passed away. She was 83.

Popularly known among the Sil Mathas and the laity of Kahawatta, Kalalella, Pelmadulla, Pathakada and Bunginriya areas, as Sudharma Sil Mathawa, she leaves her husband Seiman Thanthirige and seven children.

Her remains lie at residence near Aluth Nuwara Devalaya and the cremation will take place at Pelmadulla, Bathgangoda cemetery tomorrow at 4.30 p.m.

 


Kidney patient needs help

Chandhika Mariyan Weerasinghe (NIC-680060592V) of 8, Rex Dias Mawatha, Wennappuwa is diagnosed with End Stage renal failure, and has been recommended kidney transplantation for his survival according to Consultant Nephrologist of the National Hospital of Sri Lanka, Dr. S.M. Seneviratne.

The patient has to bear the cost for additional investigation and drugs which will cost around Rs.300,000 which he cannot afford.
