Sarfraz cuts through Aussie batting and Pakistan win by 71 runs

CRICKET: Australia set to get 382 to win the first Test at the famous Melbourne Cricket ground - the biggest stadium in Australia, attracted so few people that the aggregate attendance for the match would not have been sufficient to fill the big southern stand. But this was not Australia's days.

Imran Khan picked up 4 for 26 in Australia’s first innings score of 168.

Davenall Whatmore - Made the top score of 43 in Australia’s first innings total of 168.

Majid Khan - Scored 108 in Palistan’s second innings score of 353 runs.

Pakistan scored a sensational victory with their star bowler Sarfraz Nawaz going through the opposition like a knife through butter.

Australia were somewhat sitting pretty around tea, the Australians were on top of the pile. Left-hander Border had tucked a century under his belt and Hughes was going great guns and Pakistan captain Mushtaq Mohammad had 'thrown in the towel'.

But that was the time when the giant Pakistan speed star Sarfraz Nawaz torpedoed the Australians.

The home team, heeding just 98 runs with 7 wickets in hand, went crashing in the face of a once-in-a-lifetime spell from Sarfraz Nawaz.

Seven wickets fell, all to the lanky paceman Nawaz who conceded just one run. Wood, Sleep, Hogg, Clark and Hurst all came and went, as it through a revolving door. And Pakistan skipper Mushtaq said, Sarfraz's sensational spell was' an Himalayan performance."

Andrew Hilditch - Made 62 in Australia’s second innings score of 310.

Sarfraz Nawaz had the magic spell and grabbed 9 for 86 in the Australian second innings total of 310. In the first innings he had 2 for 39 in Australia’s first innings score of 168.

Alan Border - An attractive 105 in Australia’s second innings score of 310.

Kim Hughes - Made 84 in Australia’s second innings total of 310.

Zaheer Abbas - A solid 59 in Pakistan’s second innings score of 353.

He had a bag of 9 for 86. His previous best had been 6 for 89 against the West Indies at Lahore. Sarfraz also joined India's Jasu Patel and England's Jim Laker in the then exclusive club of those who had taken nine wickets in an innings.

Pakistan who batted first, made 196 with three 305- skipped Mushtaq Mohammad (36), Imran Khan (33) and Sarfraz Nawaz (35) being the top scorers. Australia's Hogg took 4 for 49 along with Hurst taking 3 for 55.

Aussies failed

The Aussies didn't get runs as they liked and were out for 168 with Davenell Whatmore being the top scorer with 43. Imran Khan did the damage for Pakistan in the Aussies first innings, taking 4 for 26, while Sarfraz Nawaz had 2 for 39 and Wasim Raja - the spinner taking 2 for 23.

Came the second innings and Pakistan's batsman - Majid Khan (108) and one - drop batsman Zaheer Abbas (59) got into act of making runs and the pair added 135 runs in their grand second - wicket partnership.

The middle-order contributed much and Pakistan seemed to be on top. They went upto 353 for 9 wickets and closed their innings.

Tough ask

It was a Tough ask for Australia in their second innings. But Australia did put up a fight with Alan Border getting a century and Kim Hughes making 84.

However, the target was a little too much for the Aussies and they were all out for 310 runs in their second innings - and that closed the chapter in second of the Pakistanis.

It was wonderful bowling by Sarfraz Nawaz who brought victory for the Pakistanis!
