Royal take Under 16 Rugby Title
Royal College, Colombo clinched the Cup Championship of the Western
Province Under 16 twelve-a-side rugby tournament by beating Isipatana
College by 12 points (one goal, one try) to 5 (one try) in the final
played at Royal Sports Complex yesterday after the scores stood 5-all at
half time.
Isipatana opened scoring midway in the first half through an
unconverted try by winger Dilan Gallage. The Royalists equalised in the
seventh minute when winger Gavesh Yapa fell over for an unconverted try
to make it 5-all at 'Lemons'.
The Royalists put the issue beyond doubt in the 6th minute of the
second half through a splendid try by skipper and full back Banuka
Gamage which was converted by fly half Ayendra Subasinghe as the
Royalists ran out worthy winners by 12 points to 5.
Isipatana beat Science 29-5 in the first semi-final while Royal
overcame Mahanama by 10-0 in the other semi-final. Mahanama bagged the
plate championship by defeating Science by 7 points. (one goal) to nil.
St. Peter's College took the Bowl Championship by overcoming St.
Joseph's College by 5 points (one try) to nil.
D. S. Senanayake College scored a convincing 22 points (one goal,
three tries) to nil win over Wesley College to clinch the Shield
Championship.
