Police warn speed fiends
by Ananda KANNANGARA
The City Traffic Police has warned drivers and motorcyclists to
refrain from driving at high speed on straight roads, overtaking other
vehicles at road bends and driving without valid driving licences as
this had resulted in over 100 road accidents daily all over the country.
The police also warned motorists against driving on long journeys
without taking a break as over 50 percent accidents occur daily as a
result.Police spokesperson, SP, Prishantha Jayakody yesterday told the
Sunday Observer that novice drivers who lack driving experience should
take special care when driving on highways.
Jayakody called upon motorists and motorcyclists to check the brakes
and tyres before driving.
The SP also warned trishaw drivers to refrain from overloading and
added that only a maximum of three passengers could travel in a trishaw
at a time.
He said most of the trishaw accidents take place when trishaw drivers
creep between vehicles on busy roads. A senior police officer of the
Yakkala police said that motorists should pay attention to warning
boards erected on either side of the road and added that three people of
the same family were killed on the spot last week at the Yakkala
junction, as the driver had ignored such a warning sign and tried to
overtake a lorry at a road bend.
