Priyadarshani KAHAWALA, Ingiriya Central Group Cor.
Thirty-five students were awarded scholarships at a ceremony
organised by Horana Pradeshiya Sabha Vice Cahirman Ashoka Ranathugna on
the initiative of Minister of Good Governance and Infrastructure
Facilities, Ratnasiri Wickramanayaka and Kalutara District
Parliamentarian Vidura Wickramanayaka. The scholarships were financed
from the personal fund provided by the Vice Chairman.
Minister Wickramanayaka said: "Due to today's education system
children are subject to various pressure. Today people are reluctant to
ennage in self-employment.
They feel that those jobs are not respectable. Today, the rubber
industry in our area is facing a critical labour problem. Some people
don't like to do that type of jobs. These jobs provide economic benefits
to the country. People need to understand this.
Kalutara District Parliamentarian Vidura Wickramanayaka said, "Nobody
has the right to deprive children of their childhood. We enjoyed freedom
during our childhood. But today, children don't enjoy that beautiful
childhood. They are slaves to education. They don't have time even to
play. Politicians of the past did not go by colours, political parties
or groups. They were honest. Today things have changed.
Ingiriya Co-Operative Society Chairman Sunil Jayakody, Manager,
People's Bank, Ingiriya, S. Wanniarachchi, Vice Cahirman, Horana Urban
