Minister Mahindananda Aluthgamage said that the Government would
definitely win all Municipal Councils including the Colombo Municipal
Council (CMC) at the forthcoming Local Government polls due to the vast
development carried out by the Government in the cities and the utmost
confidence reposed by the people on President Mahinda Rajapaksa.
At present the UPFA has gained power in all Pradeshiya Sabhas which
means that the villagers support the President and the Government.
If we were to take the UNP list in Colombo, there is no worthwhile
candidate to vote for. Though the UNP Mayoral candidate is a Muslim, he
does not have the support of Muslims in Colombo and there is no unity
among the UNP candidates contesting the CMC, the Minister told the
Sunday Observer.
The UPFA mayoral candidate for the CMC is a former Minister.
Moreover, prominent UNPers such as former Minister Sirisena Cooray’s
son, former CMC Deputy Mayor Azad Sally, former UNP Deputy Minister
Mohamed Maharoof and former CMC Mayor Ganeshalingam’s wife are
contesting the CMC under the UPFA ticket. Therefore, the UPFA has
fielded a group of reputed candidates, the Minister said.
The Minister said that at present there is a huge political crisis
within the UNP. Instead of winning the Local Government polls, they are
fighting with their leader. Therefore, the UNP will face a severe
setback at the forthcoming LG polls, especially in the CMC. The UNP
would not resolve its crisis even in another five or ten years.
Minister Aluthgamage said the residents of Colombo are aware of the
peaceful atmosphere in Colombo due to the Government eradicating
terrorism. The Urban Development Authority is doing a tremendous job to
develop the Colombo city under the guidance of Defence Secretary
Gotabaya Rajapaksa.
Everybody is commenting on the measures taken by the Government to
develop the Colombo city.
It is likewise in Kandy. The UPFA has fielded a brilliant team of
candidates for the Kandy Municipal Council. There is no candidate in the
UNP list who can equal the UPFA candidates. The Government has done much
to develop Kandy as well, he said. |
