Carnatic Vocal Music Concerts

A series of Carnatic music concerts by T.M Krishna will be held in Jaffna, Kilinochchi and Vavuniya and in Colombo.

The concert in Jaffna will be held at 5.00 p.m on October 2 at Veerasingham Hall and in Kilinochchi the concert will be at 5.00 p.m. on October 3 at Central College Hall and in Vavuniya the performance will be at 5.00 p.m on October 4 at Urban Council Hall. T.M. Krishna will also deliver a talk at the Indian Cultural Centre, Colombo on 'The Character of Carnatic Classical Music' at 6.00 p.m. on October 5. The lecture will be followed by the screening of a documentary on T.M. Krishna titled Margazhi Raagam.

T.M. Krishna, one of the most celebrated musicians of the young generation is going to have Carnatic vocal music performances especially in the northern regions of Sri Lanka such as Jaffna, Kilinochchi and Vavuniya as well as a concert in Colombo. He is invited by the Indian Cultural Centre, Colombo to enthral the classical music loving community living in the Northern Province. The Department of Culture, Northern Province and The Consulate General of Jaffna are co-hosting the music troupe with the support of Virakesari Newspaper.

T.M. Krishna is at the forefront of classical vocalists in India today and is known in the musical world as a classicist.

His tremendous stage presence, his awe-inspiring voice, his great scholarship and his ability to transcend cultural borders makes him the greatest ambassador of Carnatic classical music.

He is an author who has co-authored "Voices Within" a book dedicated to some of the greats of Carnatic music and contributes regularly to various journals and newspapers. He has also always been in the forefront to raise very many sensitive issues that affects Carnatic music over many years.

The music troupe of T.M. Krishna comprises of violinist Akkarai S. Subhalakshmi, the disciple of P.S. Narayanaswamy and Chitravina N. Ravikiran, mridangist Kallidaikurichi, a disciple of Palakkad R. Raghu S. Sivakumar, Ghatam artiste Giridhar Uduppa, a disciple of Sukanya Ramgopal and V. Suresh and Ganjira artiste Alathur T. Rajaganesh, a disciple of V. Nagarajan and B. Harikumar

In Colombo the concert of T.K. Krishna is part of the Navarathri Festival, conducted by the Department of Hindu Religious and Cultural Affairs, Sri Lanka. The Navarathri Festival is held at 5.00 p.m on October 7 at Ramakrishna Mission Hall, Wellawatte, Colombo 06. Prime Minister D.M. Jayarathna will be the chief guest on the occasion.

India's High Commissioner Ashok K. Kantha, the and Hon. M.K.A.D.S Gunavathana M.P Deputy Minister of Buddhasasana and Religious Affairs will be the guests of honour. H.P. Cashian Herath, Secretary, Ministry of Buddhasasana and Religious Affairs will be a special guest in the function chaired by Shanthi Navukarasan, Director, Department of Hindu Religious and Cultural Affairs. The music concert of T.M. Krishna will be followed by Shakthi Samarpanam a dance students of Nirthana Dance School, choreographed by Shivananthy Haritharshan.


Musical show to felicitate Somasiri Medagedara

The Somasiri Medagedara Fan Foundation has organised a musical show and a felicitation ceremony to mark three decades of music career of Somasiri Medagedara in titled "Issara bendi pema sithwala suwandai- adaraneeya Medagedara" It will be held at the National Youth Centre, Maharagama on October 1 at 7.pm. Youth Affairs and Skills Development Minister Dullas Allahapperuma will be the chief guest. Medagedara will also launch his latest CD "Pahan Vetak" containing 19 songs written by popular lyricists.

Medagedara will sing 25 of his old and new songs at the show which will be backed by the SLBC musical band led by Saman Wijesinghe. His contemporaries such as Chandralekha Perera, and Dhammika Karunaratne and popular singers such as Deepika Priyadharshani Peiris, Pradeepa Dharmadasa and Sulochana Sandamali will participate in the show. His eldest son Yasas Kantha Medagedara and daughter Yashoda Rasanjali Medagedara will also join in singing. The show is open to the public.

Padmashree Hariharan and Sarangan Sri Ranganathan

Sruthi, a concert featuring Padmashree Hariharan (India) with Sarangan.Sri Ranganathan (Srilanka) with an entourage of more than 30 instruments on stage will be held October 15 in Sydney and October 22 in Melbourne in,Australia.

Hariharan, two time National Award winner, and the recipient of the prestigious Padmashree award ,is the undisputed King of contemporary Indian music. An established Ghazal and playback singer. His songs embrace Indian,Western, and asian influences ,connecting with hearts and minds all over the world.

Sarangan is today, appreciated both in the field of classical music and fusion music as an International phenomenon.

A classical Sitar virtuoso, mesmerizing singer, and an excellent keyboard player of the highest order. His consistently brilliant and exciting performances have not only established him in his own country , but also , gained him fame all over the world. He has collaborated with the Sydney Symphony orchestra, Billy Cobham , Guru Karai kudi mani , Padmashree A.Hariharan , Shreya Ghosal, and many other celebrities.


Raffealla's 'Twisted Eye'

An art and photographic exhibition 'Twisted Eye' by Raffealla Fernando, a past pupil of St. Bridget's Convent Colombo 7 will be held at the Lionel Wendt Art Gallery on October 3 and 4.

Raffealla Fernando held a solo exhibition at the age of 14 with her creations in line art, and water colour painting, pencil drawings, pen drawings, glass paintings and cartoon sketches. She has also taken part in several art and photography exhibitions and has won several competitions too.

The Japanese Art Gallery exhibits one of her paintings. She has worked as a photographer at ETV Vanguard Company for maxa.lk and is also the winner of the Sri Lanka's up and coming fashion designer of the year 2010.

She is the 2nd runner-up of the Sunday Observer Fashion Designer and the winner of Sari category of 2010 and also the winner of the haute couture evening wear segment and cocktail-wear segment in Sri Lanka's up and coming fashion designer of 2010.

She is invited to take part in 'NOLCHA' New York Fashion Week to be held in 2012 as the only Sri Lankan designer and she will also take part in the Maldivian Fashion Week in 2012.

She graduated from the International Academy of Fashion designing and also graduated in Jewellery Designing from JCAD.
