Accident on Colombo-Negombo road:

Trishaw driver killed

A jeep travelling at an excessive speed, past midnight on Thursday, crossed the centre island and knocked down a three- wheeler travelling on the other side of the road, killing the three-wheeler driver on the Colombo-Negombo Road, police sources told the Sunday Observer.

According to police, the deceased three-wheeler driver was identified as Mohamed Rafi Mohamed (35). He succumbed to injuries after being admitted to the Negombo hospital.

The accident occurred at Eriyaghalinda junction in Seeduwa.

The jeep was travelling in the direction of Colombo from Negombo. The Assistant Elections Commissioner of Galle, who was travelling in the front seat of his official jeep, escaped unhurt. The jeep driver, who was under the influence of liquor, sustained minor head injuries. The jeep, having knocked down the three-wheeler, finally came to a halt after knocking down a wall.

The Seeduwa police arrested the jeep driver and produced him before the JMO Negombo for drunk driving. The Assistant Commissioner of Elections was given bail by the police. Acting OIC Seeduwa police is investigating the fatal accident.
