Maldives lifts spa ban

The Maldives government has decided to reopen the spas in the country following a directive issued by President Mohamed Nasheed, according to a media release issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of the Maldives.

The release states that the opening of spas in more than 100 tourist islands reflect a national consensus that the Maldives should follow, a moderate and tolerant religious path since the introduction of Islam more than 800 years ago. At a press conference held in Kurumba Maldives, President Nasheed ordered the authorities to lift the ban on spas with immediate effect, while the country awaits the decision of the Supreme Courts whether spas could operate.

Foreign Minister Naseem expressed hope for a positive ruling from the Supreme Court.

Minister Naseem reassured investors with business interest in the Maldives and foreign tourists visiting the country that the government would remain steadfast in ensuring economic stability while upholding fundamental values and democracy. - J.J
