Human trafficking – Lanka a transit hub

Sri Lanka has become a transit hub, a gateway to the western hemisphere for human traffickers who smuggle men and women from different parts of the globe via the country. Several human smugglers operating in the country have been taken in for questioning during the past several months, Police Media Spokesman, SP Ajith Rohana told the Sunday Observer.

Actions speak louder than words

The biggest obstacle was the heavy presence of deadly mines which the fleeing Tamil Tigers ‘sowed’ haphazardly. It made mine clearing a time consuming and dangerous operation to be conducted cautiously and thoroughly. Also, the situation in the Vanni was far more complex in terms of the damage to infrastructure and hidden arms caches. Above all, there were thousands of battle-hardened LTTE killers among the IDPs to be resettled.

The crash that rocked Mount Lavinia

Many woke with a start from their beds last Wednesday on hearing about the accident involving a van transporting schoolchildren to Colombo from Panadura. The terrible accident occurred on Galle road opposite the Odeon Theatre around 6.30. a.m.
