Police warn against excessive speeding on Expressway

The City Police yesterday focused attention on the first death that was reported from the Southern Expressway on Thursday and warned drivers to refrain from excessive speeding while driving alone, especially at night.

According to Police, the 26-year old youth from Dehiwala would have fallen asleep while driving alone at high speed.

The car had crashed into a rock and the driver thrown out of the vehicle.

Police spokesman Ajith Rohana said that motorists should ensure that the brakes and gears of their vehicles are in good condition and also keep note of the speed limit mentioned at every point on the Expressway.

"All drivers, whether in vehicles with English number-bearing plates or otherwise should wear seat belts for self protection.,"

A recent survey mentions that nearly 95 motor accidents were reported on the Southern Expressway due to the negligence of drivers who do not follow the road rules and guidelines.

The survey also reveals that the running condition of some vehicles was not up to proper standard and that such vehicles should not run on the Expressway.
