Development Communication Theory and Practice shows the applicability of the theory through a research done by the author who is a lecturer in Mass Communication at the University of Kelaniya.

He presents a model of development communication that draws heavily from indigenous cultural resources.

In the first chapter the author explains details of the research study while the second chapter is on sustainable development, capacity Development as well as the development theories including the dependency theory, world system theory, state theory and economic development.

In the third chapter he discusses rural community development communication which includes development communication theories of Wilbur Schramm, Daniel Lerner and Everett M. Rogers.

The author has explained what traditional media is as well as folklore and folk arts. He says that folk media can be used in development communication.

The book can also be used as a guide for those who do research.

According to Prof. Naren Chitty, development communication is a concept that was first introduced by the Asian scholar Florengel Rosairo-Braaid.

Sri Lanka has been a testing ground for the use of traditional forms of communication in rural community development and Manoj Jinadasa is a young Sri Lankan scholar to throw light on the area based on research conducted by him.

It is a useful book for those studying development communication.

Pyotr Tchaikovsky music competition

The Russian Centre in Colombo will hold a music competition to mark Pyotr Tchaikovsky's birth anniversary on May 7. The students of the Russian School of Music will be given a chance to compete in different age group categories, to mark the special event. The winners will be awarded certificates and Pyotr Tchaikovsky Special Award. Pyotr Tchaikovsky was born in 1840 and became a Russian Composer whose works included Symphonies, Concerts, Operas, Ballets and Chamber music.

Some of them are amongst the most popular concert and theatrical music in the classical repertoire. He was the first Russian composer whose music made a lasting impression internationally. Tchaikovsky was honoured in 1884 by Tsar Alexander 111 and awarded a lifetime pension in the late 1880s.


Balloth Ekka Be

Ravindra Ariyarathne's Balloth Ekka Be will be staged at the Tower Hall on April 5 at 6.45 p.m.

The cast includes Wijaya Nandasiri, Gihan Fernando, Kumara Thirimadura, Roshan Pilapitiya, Saman Hemaratne and Anusha Dissanayake.
