Education Minister confident of better GCE (O/L) results in 2013

Education Minister Bandula Gunawardana has focussed attention on the excellent performance of approximately 3,908 students who obtained nine 'As' for all subjects at the 2011 GCE (O/L) examination and said that this number could be increased with the implementation of new education policies, from next year. It is reported that in addition to the excellent results shown by students of Visakha Vidyalaya, Royal College, Colombo and several other major schools, 114 students at Gampaha Ratnawali Balika Vidyalaya had obtained nine 'As' at the examination, while 65 students obtained eight 'As' and 28 students got seven 'As'.

Ratnawali Balika, principal Mrs. H.A.H. Jayawardane told the Sunday Observer that 285 students had sat the examination and the sacrifice by teachers and students helped achieved such excellent results for the first time.

According to a spokesman for the Examinations Department around 443,298 schoolchildren had sat the GCE (O/L) examination in December 2011 and of them 12,795 had failed in all nine subjects.

Minister Gunawardana said a record 44.57 percentage students had passed in the English Language paper in 2011 compared to 42.36 percent students in 2010, while a record percentage of 62.40 students had passed in Science compared to 61.72 percent in 2010.

A record 55.3 percent passed in Mathematics and this number could also be increased by appointing more teachers before the end of the year.

Meanwhile, a blind female student of Horana Thakshila College secured nine 'A' passes under the Braille system for all subjects for the first time in the Sri Lanka's education history.
