Special traffic scheme for Sinhala and Tamil New Year
by Jayampathy JAYASINGHE
A special traffic scheme will come into effect in the main cities
next week on account of the forthcoming Sinhala and Tamil New Year.
Police will enforce road safety rules strictly to minimise the number
of fatal road accidents during the festive season as a result of drunk
driving, Police Media Spokesman SP Ajith Rohana told the Sunday
Observer.
He said the traffic operation scheme will come into effect on April 2
and remain in force for two weeks to detect errant drivers who violate
the Highway Traffic Code.
During the festive season policemen will be deployed round the clock
near hotels and public places where musical shows are held.
“Motorists have been warned not to drive vehicles after consuming
liquor especially after night functions.
They should let others drive their vehicles. Police have also warned
motorists to lock their vehicles securely while parking at shopping
malls and public car parks and not leave expensive items such as
computer laptops and jewellery in vehicles.
Vehicles parked at unauthorised places will be towed to the nearest
police station and released after a fine and towing charges are paid.
Traffic policemen have also been instructed to enforce the seat belt
rule during the festive season, the police spokesman said.
Police have also warned the public to avoid walking on the rail track
using mobile phones.
Four persons died last week as a result of being knocked by trains
while walking on the rail track. People are prohibited from walking on
the rail track, the spokesman said.
