Junior National Athletic Championship:

Six new meet records set up on third day

Six new meet records were established a the time going to press on the third day of the Junior National Athletic Championship at the Mahinda Rajapakse Stadium in Diyagama, yesterday.

In the girls under 16 shot putt event F.S. Rishard of Kalutara BNS shattered the existing record set by Zeenath Imfaz of Budhist Ladies College (10.26m) with a new mark of 10.56m. In the boys under 23, 800m race R.K.L.S. Somawardena of the Sri Lanka Navy clocked 1.50.76 sec.

To erase the previous 1.52.4 set by Manoj Pushpakumara 1.52.4 of A. Rathnayake MV, Wallale in 2005.

In the girls under 23 shot putt W.T.K. Fernando of Sri Lanka Air Force lobbed a distance of 13.05 m to better the 13.03m by Kumudumali Fernando of the Air Force set in 2011.

In the boys under 16 hurdles event A.P. Ravisanka of Seevali MV, Ratnapura (13.77sec) broke a seven-year-old record which was set by P.G. Buultjens of Vidyartha, Kandy (13.79 sec). In the girls under 20 high jump event Madushani Siriwardena of Galenbindunuwewa CC cleared 1.80m to establish a new mark bettering Lahiruni Peiris’ (1.70m) of Devi Balika Vidyalaya, Colombo. In the 110m hurdles for boys under 20 K.D. Randeniya of Ranabima Royal College, Gannoruwa won the event with a timing of 14.22 seconds to better Sajith Nadeeshan’s 14.75 sec of Maris Stella in 2007.

Shot putt – Girls under-16: 1. F.S. Rishard (Kalutata BNS) 10.56m, 2. A. Gunawardena (Methodist College, Colombo) 10.53m, 3. S.M.A. Fernando (Lyceum International School, Wattala) 10.18m.

800m - Boys under-23: R.K. Somawardena (Navy) 1.50.76 saec., 2. D.M.T. Dissanayake (Unattached) 1.53.09, 3. A.A. Aamarasinghe (Unattached) 1.55.58 sec.

Shot Putt - Girls under-23: W.T.K. Fernando (SLAF) 13.05m, 2. W.A.D. Weeraratne (SLAF) 9.28m, 3. A.W. Amarasinghe (Army) 9.17m.

100m hurdles - Boys under-16: 1. A.P. Ravisanka (Seevali, Ratnapura) 13.77m, 2. H.A. Dilshan (Kuliyapitiya CC) 14.01 sec, 3. V. Mahinkanda (Ananda, Colombo) 14.58 sec.

High jump - Girls under-20: Madushani Siriwardena (Galenbindunuwewa CC) 1.80m, 2. N.A. Shailini (Sri Pada MV, Hatton) 1.40m, 3. M. Boteju (Devi Balika MV) 1.35m.

110m hurdles - Boys under-20: 1. K.D. Randeniya (Ranabima Royal College, Gannoruwa) 14.22sec., 2. Sandun Sandaruwan (Henegama CC) 14.67 sec., 3. K.V.K. Antony (SLAF) 14.70sec.
