Peterites in 34-29 win over Trinity

St. Peters College, Bambalapitiya pulled off a great 34 points (4
goals, 2 penalties) to 29 (3 goals, 1 try, 1 penalty) won over Trinity
College in their rugby match played at the Trinity College rugby stadium
at Pallekele yesterday. At half time the Peterites led 24-17.
This match was marred by an unwarranted incident in which a Trinity
player was assaulted by a Peterite player seated in the bench and play
had to be halted far about 8 minutes and referee Irshard Cader ordered
the offending Peterite player off the playing area. St. Peter's College
opened scoring in the third minute when fly half. Dulaj Perera fired a
30 minute penalty.
But the Trinitians took over the lead in the 7th minute when winger
Dharshana Udalagama made a breezy run to score near the post. Centric
Thisila Karunatillake added the extra points. Trinity 7-3.
It was not long before the Peterites took over the lead through a
fine try by lock. Suranga Dulan who ran 30 minutes to score near the
post. Dulaj Perera added the extra points. St. Peters 10-7.
In the 13th minute a 30 metre penalty fixed by Thisila Karunatillake
levelled the scores to 10-all. The game see-sawed again and Trinity
regained the lead when their full back joined the three quarter to score
near the post. Thisila Karunatillake added the extra points. Trinity
17-10.
A try by fly half Dulaj Perera who made a breezy 25 metre run to
touch down and added the extra points himself to equal the scores. 17
all.
Minutes before the half time St. Peters flanker Malith Magage powered
his way to score near the posts. Dulaj Perera added the extra points.
St. Peters' 24-17.
After the resumption Trinity's three quarter moved the ball and
Dharshana Udalagama scored by the right corner flag.
This try went unconverted Trinity 22-24.
In the 23rd minute a penalty put over by Dulaj Perera saw the
Peterites extend their lead to 27-22.
In the 36th minute Peterites won a scrum almost mid field and No. 8
Anuradha Herath ran nearly 45 metres to score mid left and Dulaj Perera
added the extra points.
In the dying stages of the game Trinity's skipper and centre Kaneel
Senaviratne scored and Karunatillake added the extra points (34-29).
