Six hundred athletes at Kandy District Veterans Meet

ATHLETICS: Over 600 athletes (men & women) will participate at the All-Island Veterans Athletic Championship conducted by the Kandy District Veterans Athletic Association which will be held at the Bogambara Stadium on 19th and 20th of May, 2012.

Oldest woman athlete who is participating in this meet will be 81-year-old A.S. Somawathie of Kegalle District and the oldest among men will be 91-year-old H.J.P. Jayasekera of Kandy District.

Nine men and four women who won at the International Veterans Meet are also participating in this championship. Following are the medal winners at international level.

Men - 40 age group - R.D. Samarasinghe - Colombo District, Tissa Ratnayake - Kandy District; 50 age group - Sunil Wilfred of Gampola; 55 age group - Gamini Weerasinghe of Gampola; 60 age group - Neil Wickremarachchi of Kandy District; 70 age group - K.M. Karunaratne of Kandy District, J.M. Punchi Banda of Kegalle District; 75 age group: R.A. Gunasekera of Kegalle District; 90 age group: H.J.P. Jayasekera

Women - 40 age group - M.D. Peiris of Gampaha District; 55 age group - K.A. Wanniarachchi of Kalutara District; 60 age group - T.I.F. Karunaratne of Gampaha District; 80 age group - A.S. Somawathie of Kegalle District

Chief Guest at the opening ceremony will be Earl Gunasekera, the Deputy Minister of Plantation. Chief Guest on the final day will be the Mayor of Kandy Mahen Ratwatte.
