CRICKET: ICC pitch consultant Andy Atkinson was in Matara on Friday (11th) to inspect the progress made at the Uyanwatta Stadium which is being upgraded to international standards as a venue for practices and practice matches for teams participating in the Women’s T20 World Cup in September 2012. ICC’s host Liaison Officer for the women’s T20 World Cup Michaela Rees accompanied him.

The Women’s T20 will be played at the Galle International Cricket Stadium. Atkinson was satisfied on the progress made on the 12 centre pitches and six side pitches which are being laid at Uyanwatte Stadium by Sri Lanka Cricket’s Chief Curator Anuruddha Polonowita and assistant D.A.J. Sampath. He drew the attention of the ground staff too many shortcomings that needed to be rectified before the tournament.
