Bangladesh in stunning 25-run win over Sri Lanka

Bangladesh beat Sri Lanka by 25 runs in their opening Under 19 World Cup cricket match played at the Allan Border Field at Brisbane, Australia yesterday.

In pursuit of 250 runs to win off 50 overs the Lankans were dismissed for 224 in 48.4 overs.

Sri Lanka Under 19 captain Sanitha de Mel won the toss and invited Bangladesh to bat first and they went on to total an impressive 249 runs for 7 wickets in their stipulated 50 overs.

Bangladesh losing two quick wickets for 42 in the ninth over was revived by a fine century by Inamul Haque (101) off 127 deliveries with nine fours and a six. Haque and Asif Ahmed (84) off 114 deliveries with six fours steadied the ship with a useful 141 run stand for the third wicket which eventually saw the Bangladeshis reach their final total of 249 for 7 leaving the Lankans to get 250 in 50 overs for a win.

In reply the Lankans were given a reasonable start by Jason Perera and Pabasara Waduge who put on 42 runs in 7.3 overs. But the Islanders lost their way losing four wickets for 58 runs in the 16th over. But vice captain Angelo Jayasinghe (83) off 121 deliveries with six fours and a six and Lahiru Madusanka(48) kept Sri Lanka's hopes flickering bringing the score from 58 for 3 to 143 when Madusanaka was run out. Skipper de Mel tried to up the tempo and was out for 21. Thereafter Niroshan Dickwella too was run out and the Lankans were at one stage needing 83 runs to win off 60 balls with 5 wickets in hand when skipper de Mel and the deputy at the crease. Bangladesh's Soumya Sarkar produced a fine penultimate over to take three wickets for 10 runs.
