21,000 policemen to be deployed :
Security beefed up for PC polls
Police have finalised security arrangements for
the forthcoming Provincial Council elections to be held on September
8 in the North Central, Eastern and the Sabaragamuwa provinces to
ensure a peaceful election and the post election period, Senior DIG
Administration and Elections, Gamini Navaratne told the Sunday

The Police Department would mark its 146th
anniversary since its inception in 1866 on September 3, Police Media
Spokesman Senior SP Attorney-at-Law Ajith Rohana said. The first
Inspector General of Police was P.W.R. Campbell while the 33rd
Inspector General of Police was NK Illangakoon.

Wanted criminals rounded up
Several persons including criminals wanted by
the police in connection with various offences who had been
absconding for a considerable period of time have been taken up for
questioning by the police. This follows the recent directive by IGP
N.K. Illangakoon to all police stations in the country, Police Media
Spokesman SSP Ajith Rohana said.

Money lender, four-year-old daughter gunned down in cold blood
Police suspect the gunman and his companion who
were riding a motorcycle in a rubber estate last week to be
professional killers who had a mission to accomplish. They had
arrived at Polhena in Millewa when darkness enveloped the area. The
gunman and his accomplice wore helmets to hide their identity.
