160,000 children suffer from vision problems

A survey conducted by the Health Ministry has revealed that nearly 160,000 children in Sri Lanka have vision problems.

These children suffer from glaucoma and formation of a white layer on the eye, an official of the Health Ministry said.

The Health Ministry has already implemented the 'Vision 2020' program to treat these children, Ministry sources said.

The official said 12,000 children have undergone operations to remove the white layer from their eyes.

Under this program, treatment is provided free and donors have granted Rs. 30 million to provide treatment to children with vision problems, the sources said.
