IOM holds Migration Summit

The International Organisation of Migration (IOM)Summit was held last week in Geneva, Switzerland.

Chairman of the Sri Lanka Bureau of Foreign Employment (SLBFE) Amal Senadhilankara and Additional Manager of International Affairs K.O.D.D. Fernando participated in the summit.

The SLBFE Chairman said the issues discussed at the Summit included protection and fundamental rights of Sri Lankan overseas workers and whether in future they will have to face harassment from their employers as many such complaints have already been made by many employees to the International Organisation of Migration.

The SLBFE Chairman said the 2011 Geneva Summit suggested laws and regulations regarding overseas workers which are in force at present.

According to the SLBFE Chairman, there are 1.5 million Sri Lankan overseas workers of which 80 percent are employed in the Middle East.
