The UPFA victory in three Provincial Councils of the North Central, Sabaragamuwa and Eastern Provinces was the main topic of conversation in political circles.

Meanwhile the strike initiated by University Academics is still continuing. We spoke to political higher-ups and obtained their views in this regard.

Development drive did the trick

Senior Minister for International Monetary Cooperation, Dr. Sarath Amunugama:

Q: What is your view about the recent PC election results?

A: The main reason for the UNP debacle was that it had alienated itself from the people both in the urban and rural sectors.

Q: The UPFA led by President Mahinda Rajapaksa continues to achieve electoral victories since 1994. What is the secret of the success?

A: The UPFA Government which had a clear vision is improving the economy. Infrastructure facilities were improved and the country's industrial and agricultural sector have been given a boost.

Proof of representative democracy

Youth Affairs and Skills Development Minister, Dullas Alahapperuma:

Q: What is the message delivered by the recent PC election?

A: The victory in all three PCs by the UPFA is a clear proof of representative democracy. As the UPFA had called upon voters in the three provinces, they have cast their vote in such a way to deliver a strong message to the international community, the separatist elements and pro Eelam lobbyists.

No room for confrontational politics

Higher Education Minister, S. B. Dissanayake:

Q: The university academics appear to be resolute in winning their demands. What is your opinion?

A: The issue was sorted out last week and a joint statement was to follow. Later the FUTA officials rejected the statement. They seem to be puppets of some unseen anti-government elements.
