Kimiko sets up a new National Record in the women’s 100m backstroke
event

Sri Lanka’s precocious 13-year-old Kimiko Raheem set a new National
Record in the women’s 100-metre backstroke on Saturday at the National
Swimming Championship progressed at the renovated Sugathadasa Indoor
Stadium, Colombo.
The Asian International School swimmer clocked 1.07.90, breaking the
previous national mark of 1.09.62 set by Nadeera Jayasekera in the
National Age Group meet held in July 2002 in Ananda College pool.
Raheem, sister of Mayumi Raheem, who won three Gold medals in 2006 SAF
Games in Sri Lanka bettered the SAF Games record of 1.09.05 set by
Fariha Zaman also in 2006 SAF Games in Sri Lanka.
Kimiko Raheem, Sri Lanka’s medal prospect in the 2013 SAF Games which
will be held in India, set another new national record of 2.30.12 in the
200m, breaking the previous record of 2.31.02 set by Dipika Chanmugam in
1990 at the National Swimming Championship. Chanmugam won seven Gold
medals in the 1991 SAF Games in Sri Lanka, where Sri Lanka became top
among the SAF nations by winning 41 Gold medals overall.
Meanwhile, Raheem defeated Sri Lanka’s 2012 London Olympian Reshika
Udugampola in the women’s 50-metre butterfly to set another national
record clocking 30.67. It was earlier set by 19-year-old Udugampola, who
clocked 30.83 on September 22, 2011.
The eye-catcher of the 2012 Swimming Nationals, Matthew Abeysinghe,
bettered his own national record clocking 1.54.72 by breaking the
previous record of 1.55.33 set in July 2012 in Malaysian Open meet.
In the last event of yesterday, Asian International schoolboy set a
new national record of 4.17.79 by erasing the previous record of 4.27.76
in the 400-metre freestyle relay.
Today, the final day of the National Swimming Championship, will be
graced by Sports Minister Mahindananda Aluthgamage as the chief guest at
the closing ceremony scheduled at 4 pm.
