India get unexpected win, beat Australia by 59 runs

Sunil Gavaskar – 70 in India’s 2nd innings score of 324

CRICKET: A dramatic collapse by Australia who were shot out for 83 runs needing 143 runs for victory saw them tumble to defeat in their Test match against India at the Melbourne Cricket Grounds in the 1980-81 series. This was truly a fine display of bowling by the Indians in their second innings.

Though the Aussies target was only 143 runs, they just could not get going in the second innings, though it was a different story in the first innings. After India made a moderate score of 237 runs in the first innings with a fine knock of 114 by Gundappa Visvanath who rescued the Indians from 99 for 5 wickets to get to their ultimate total, the Australians made merry in their first innings running up the massive score of 419 in their first innings with some fine batting displays by Alan Border (124), Greg Chappel (76), Walters (78) and Marsh (45) getting runs against a not effective Indian attack.

The Indian bowlers apart from Dilip Doshi (3 for 109)didn’t impress and the Aussies scored freely.

India in their first turn made 237, but in their second innings they had a effervescent start to their second innings with openers Sunil Gavaskar (70) and Chetan Chauhan (85) getting into their stride with a fine stroke-play and their carefree batting helped India to get on with the game with a fine opening partnership of 165 runs and this helped them to get to 324 runs in their second innings.

Though Australia had to make only 143 runs for victory, this proved to be too much of a task for the Aussie batsmen in the second innings and they were shot out for 83 runs which gave the Indians somewhat of a unexpected win in this game.

G.R. Visvanath – 114 in India’s first innings score of 237

Allan Border 124 in Australia’s first innings score of 419.

Greg Chappell – 76 in Australia’s first innings score of 419.
