Lankan conditions ideal for trade expansion - UAE Commerce Minister
External Affairs Minister Prof. G.L. Peiris held discussions with
Minister for Trade and Commerce of the United Arab Emirates Sheikha
Lubna on the sidelines of the World Energy Forum in Dubai.
Sheikha Lubna recalled with pleasure her recent visit to Sri Lanka
and commented with enthusiasm on the vistas of economic opportunity
opening up in the country, and the resulting potential for significant
expansion of the trade relationship between Sri Lanka and the UAE.She
showed particular interest in the development of tourism, for which
Sheikha Lubna considered the present circumstances in Sri Lanka to be
ideal. Prof. Peiris briefed her about current developments in the
country with regard to the economy and investment.
He pointed out that investments from the UAE in the field of tourism
infrastructure would be especially appropriate at this time.
Sheikha Lubna observed that, in respect of expansion of trade with
the UAE such commodities as tea, spices and gems and jewellery could be
afforded priority. The two Ministers discussed practical strategies to
be pursued in this regard within the next few months.
