Kandy private bus operators inconvenience public
by S.M. Jiffrey Abdeen, Kandy South Group Cor
Private buses operating on the Kandy-Akurana-Alawathugoda road cause
much hardship to commuters. All rules are flagrantly violated by most of
these bus operators.
This bus service starts from the Clock Tower bus stand in Kandy.
Buses do not move until the next bus on schedule arrives, from which
point on it starts crawling up the Ismail Clock Tower. On the way too the
bus stops for a few minutes near the Kandy Kachcheri.
At Katugastota town halt, it stops for a few minutes, sometimes even
five minutes, before it proceeds the 100 metres to the next halt. Here
the engine is switched off and both the driver and conductor alight from
the vehicle at the entrance to the Matale road near the small bridge.
This takes about 10 minutes.
These buses do not move from bus halts until the next bus arrives and
takes over 15 minutes to move out of Katugastota town.
The distance from Kandy to Katugastota is only 10 kilometres, but the
journey takes more than an hour. The public has called on the Private
Passenger Transport Authority from Kandy to send a representative to
travel in one of these buses to ascertain for themselves the mischief
the private bus operators are upto in this area.
