Sixth World Carrom Championship 2012:

India regain men’s carrom title

Indian men slicers regained their lost title drubbing defending champions Sri Lanka 3-0 in the team championship finals at the Sixth World Carrom Championship held at Galadari Hotel, Colombo.

The current world number one, India’s Yogesh Pardeshi beat Sri Lanka’s top seed Nishantha Fernando in straight sets, 25-5 and 25-15. However, host nation’s Chamil Cooray drubbed the first attempt 18-23 against India’s K. Srinivas, who then easily sliced to win the other two sets by 25-2 and 25-8.

India’s Prakash Gaikwad beat Mohammed Sherifdeen in two straight sets 25-6 and 25-5. Thus India showed their supremacy after they suffered a shock defeat by the Lankans in the last world championship held in 2008 in France.

With this win, the Indian slicers took major honours in the sixth edition of the world series, winning the men’s and women’s world team championships.

World champion Yogesh Pardesh said: “I am really happy to win the team championship title again and I have qualified for the next round of the single’s event. And hopefull to win today.”

India is famous for the ‘strike and pocket’ table game as its governing body holds major tournaments every month giving slicers the opportunity to get more practice.

“We have around 40 strong competitors in the domestic tournament, conducted by the All India Carrom Federation. Every month we have to participate in major tournaments, where competitors face a tough challenge. Even I have been beaten, said the quiet slicer.

Both men and women singles quarter-finals, semi-finals and the finals are scheduled for today, the final day of the 16-nation tournament, where 80 slicers will vye for honours.

Sri Lanka’s Sports Minister Mahindananda Aluthgamage and Member of Parliament Namal Rajapaksa will participate along with International Carrom Federation officials at the closing ceremony, scheduled for today from 7 pm onwards.

Men’s Team Championship: India beat Sri Lanka 3-0.

Prakash Gaikwad (IND) beat Mohammed Sherifdeen (SRI) 25-6, 25-5.
Yogesh Pardeshi (IND) beat Nishantha Fernando (SRI) 25-5, 25-15.
K. Srinivas (IND) beat Chamil Cooray (SRI) 18-23, 25-2,

Women’s Team Championship: India beat Sri Lanka 3-0.

Rashmi Kumari (IND) beat Yashika Rahubadda (SRI) 25/9, 17/5
Kavita Somanchi (IND) beat Madushika Kanchanamala (SRI) 25/6, 19/4.
I Illavazhaki (IND) beat Roshita Joseph (SRI) 23/6, 25/9.
