NWP introduces novel agro method

The Ministry of Agriculture NWP PC has taken steps to introduce a novel agricultural system for the farmers to cultivate crops using organisms without utilising any kind of chemicals or chemical fertilizers. Accordingly, farmers in both Kurunegala and Puttalam Districts would be educated on this novel procedure during next two months.

This is a result of a long-term research conducted by Prof. Gamini Seneviratne of the Institute of Fundamental Studies.

Due to excessive use of chemicals in the paddylands, the useful organisms that helped the farmers in making the earth fertile have died of poisonous chemicals for decades.

The experiments have proved this fact and hence, research in growing without chemicals but allowing organisms to breed in large numbers have shown successful results.15,000 farmers are to be educated on this novel procedure during next three months in the NWP and only carbonic manure would be applied to grow crops, paddy and vegetables, said D.B. Herath, the Minister of Agriculture of the NWP PC in an interview with Sunday Observer recently.
