24th National Youth Sports Festival :

Thirteen new meet records on second day

Thirteen new meet records were set up and one record was equalled on the second day of the 24th National Youth Games, jointly conducted by the National Youth Services Council and Sri Lanka Federation of Youth Clubs under the guidance of Youth Affairs and Skills Development Ministry at the Sugathadasa Stadium, Colombo yesterday.


The over-20 men's 4X100 sprint final in progress which ended with a new meet record of 42.25sec erasing the previous mark of 42.45 also set up by Matara District last year. Kandy District's M J Jayasekera finished the 400m in 47.39 to set a new meet record erasing the previous mark of 48.5 by K K Seneviratne of Polonnaruwa District set in 2009. H K Kumarage (Gampaha) 47.77 and K D Madushan (Matale) 48.46 also passed the previous record in a fighting sprint to finish second and third respectively.

400 metres women's over-20 event was won by Hambantota District's L A Nimali in 56.40 seconds with a new meet record breaking the old record of 57.9 set by Nilanka Sanjeewani was also from Hambantoota District in 2009. The second and third place were won by G T Kumari (Gampaha) and K N Kularatne (Kandy) also bettering the previous meet record.

Anuradhapura District's D P Wijesinghe lowered the over-20 men's high jump record with a leap of 2.04 metres ahead of 2.05 metres set by S de Peiris in 2011.

On Friday, the first day, 10 new meet records were set up with eight from finals and two from the heats. According to the sources, Gampaha District leads the overall points table while Colombo and Ratnapura are jointly in second place. Kurunegala District is in third place so far - after finishing 43 final events on the second day.

Today, the final day of the three-day championship, 17 finals will be featured with the finals of the 4x400 relay events which is scheduled for 3.45pm after the arrival of the Chief Guest Hambantota District Member of Parliament Namal Rajapaksa.

High jump over-20 women's: A P Madumanthi (Kurunegala) 1.74m Long jump under-20 boys: D S Priyantha (Colombo) 7.20m Shot putt under-20 girls: M H Battage (Matara) 10.93m Javelin throw over-20 men's: D S Ranasinghe (Galle) 68.75m 110m hurdles under-20 boys: A S Sandaruwan (Gampaha) 14.69sec. Shot putt under-20 boys: R Nimalendra (Jaffna) 15.13m Triple jump over-20 men's: M E Dinesha (Gampaha) 16.09m 4x100m relay under-20 boys: Kalutara District 42.37sec 4x100m relay over-20 men's: Matara District 42.25sec.
